BLUESTAR® is used for blood detection to examine many areas which have been washed with various detergents:

• The luminol mixture doesn't disturb the potential for subsequent PCR DNA analysis.
• The luminol mixture is the stronger and longer bluish luminescence.
• The procedure is very simple but the user must follow each step.
• It has been thoroughly tested on several crime scenes in France. (Bluish areas were sent to various DNA laboratories, these labs succeeded in getting DNA profiles of the clues treated with BLUESTAR ®.)

On the crime scene:

1. Making:

• Prepare the suspected site.
• Darken the area for the BLUESTAR ® treatment.
• The Technician must to wear special clothes to avoid contamination.
• Make the BLUESTAR ® preparation. All items are included in the commercial kit.
• Adding 2 tablets of catalyser in a lightening solution bottle make the working mixture. After a few minutes, the technician must test its effectiveness with a blood sample as a positive control. Once tested it is ready for use. BLUESTAR ® to detect washed bloody surfaces.

2. Use and sampling:

• Using the atomiser included in the BLUESTAR ® kit, the technician must spray the mixture at least 50 cm from the surface.
• A bluish luminescence is a positive test.
• This luminescence begins to fade after one minute and can be brightened up thanks to a new atomiser.
• The technician must also test an unstained area of the same surface to serve as a negative control.

3. Effect on DNA Analysis

• Studies have proven that BLUESTAR ® does not interfere with confirmatory and subsequent DNA typing.
• It can be used on many surfaces and detergents have no effect on it.

In Conclusion:

BLUESTAR ® is a new luminol mixture which enables the detection of washed bloody areas. Furthermore, the bluish luminescence emitted is longer and stronger, and therefore it's easier to take photographs of BLUESTAR treatment.

Even though it is irritating, BLUESTAR ® is not toxic. Trained technicians can use it easily. BLUESTAR ® commercial kits are ideal as they are easy to use, the mixture still works several months after mixing. It is however recommended to use it as a single use item.
